Stone Sensei's Biography

In 1986 Mark Levine, a student of Shiohira Shihan, founded an outlying dojo in Fort Bragg, California. This dojo has always been small, drawing from communities dispersed along ridge tops and watersheds. Over the years, members of the dojo have provided instruction through programs at the local community college and the Mendocino Recreation Department. The dojo exists because of a core of students, dedicated despite our isolation on the North Coast. My practice began the year the dojo opened. Aikido training inevitably affects life choices; as students senior to myself moved on, I became the chief instructor of Mendocino Aikido.

Over these past thirty years it feels as if I have threading the roads along rivers, through mountains and down valleys, going (as often as possible) to train with Shiohira Shihan. I am grateful to the family and friends who have supported this training and to all the students who form the dojo. Their energy has assured the space we maintain; their appreciation of the benefits of Aikido constantly deepens my understanding of the art.
